Geotechnology: Cartography, Mapping and Map Serving

Architect Training Course
Maps are one of the few things that most people probably use at least once in their lifetime. Today we have aerial photography, electronic distance-measuring instruments, global positioning systems, remote sensing and computer technology to measure the Earth and to provide cartographers with very accurate information to use in creating maps to meet many needs. This 3-hour interactive online course discusses cartography, mapping and map serving. It looks at cartographic perception, elimination, aggregation, classification, boundaries, communities, cartographic distribution, map serving, interoperability, TCP/IP protocols and usefulness.

This course includes a test at the end. You must have Flash Player Version 7 or higher to view some parts of this course. We also recommend you view this course in Internet Explorer.

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Be able to discuss the elements a cartographer uses to produce a map and why they are important
  • Know the advantages and disadvantages of the two classification methods used to identify spatial information for inclusion into groups
  • Understand how GPS can be used to classify information for field-data-gathering purposes
  • Know how the three types of tessellation affect classification
  • Understand how a map is distributed to the Internet and what to consider when designing a map for the Internet
  • Be able to discuss map symbology
  • Understand segmentation and how it applies to demographics

To comply with AIA and state requirements, all new online courses must be evaluated to confirm the assigned credit hour value. The assigned credit hour value for this course is as stated above, pending confirmation within 90 days.
